Today we enjoy a couple of beers at Frogtown Brewery with Rod Moore and Brian Verch. Rod is the owner/founder of The Shameful Tiki Room with locations in Vancouver and Toronto, Canada; and Brian is known for his travel companion, "The Penguin." You might have seen the penguin or even been photographed with the penguin at various tiki or surf music events in the past. Rod and Brian also happen to be members of surf band, The Hang-ten Hangmen. Hear some funny stories about the penguin as well as how Rod went from owning a hockey supply store to running 2 tiki bars on each end of Canada.

Welcome to the Halloween Episode! For this episode, I've compiled a couple of haunted stories by some of our previous guests. Some of them never heard on previous episodes because I was saving them just for this one. I kick off the episode with a couple stories of my own followed by one from Johnnie Velour. The second segment is a pair of stories by Johnny Barajas and Steve "The Madman" Huffman. For the third segment, we hear stories from Michele Del Rey and Judy Luck and lastly, we wrap things up with stories by Michael Uhlenkott and Mike Hanttula. Turn the lights out... here we go....

55 The 1 Year Anniversary Show

On this episode we celebrate our 1 year anniversary! That's right, 1 year ago this week, I launched my first episode of Inside the Desert Oasis Room, recorded with Boris Hamilton, Daren Ford and Jamie Lutz. I had no topic, no format and no agenda and no experience in podcasting other than as a listener. Fast forward to today and we have over 50 episodes published with many more on the horizon and even bigger things in store for the next year.

I want to start by thanking our sponsors, past and present, who've supported us and helped keep our show on the air. To Marty Step for sponsoring our first set of equipment, thank you. To Lost on 111 in La Quinta, Ca for being our first paid sponsor on the show, thank you for having faith in me to make that investment. To previous sponsors who along the way found value in investing and keeping our show on the air, Big Toe, Careless Navigator, Bamboo Ben, Tiki Diablo, Rory Snyder & The Reef, Tiki Bosko, Tiki Oasis, Tiki Tony and Johnnie Velour, thank you. And last but not least at all, a huge Mahalo to my long term sponsors, the Tiki-Ti, Steadfast Pomade, The Royal Hawaiian and of course, Tanduay Rum who've always had my back from the day we started our partnership.

We've enjoyed the company and experiences of about 100 different guests on the show this past year, and I couldn't be more grateful for each and every one of them for taking the time to sit down, share their time, stories and wisdom. Thank you for just being part of this journey. Thank you also to our listeners for without you, the show wouldn't be where it is today. Thank you for listening week after week and thank you for being there when the show needed it most! Thank you to Ran Mosessco of the Sand Devils for our awesome theme music and thank you to Mo Herms for doing our sexy voice intro.

And of course, I would be remiss if I didn't thank Boris Hamilton, Daren Ford and Jamie Lutz for being my guinea pigs and agreeing to record that first episode with me, 1 year ago. Thank you guys for taking that leap with me and thanks for coming back to do it all again for our 1 year anniversary show! This was a fun episode to record and I hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as we did bringing it to you. Here they are again, just like the first time - with no topic, no format and no agenda! Boris Hamilton, Daren Ford and Jamie Lutz.

It's the home base from which, almost a decade ago, Kirby & his wife Polly hosted a weekly party that continued for several years, on schedule, without missing a week. Cocktails were created by Kelly "Hiphipahula" Reilly with the assistance of Tom Morgan, who also join this podcast to share stories about this window of time in LA tiki history and how the Rumpus Room and it's patrons contributed to the rebirth of the Tonga Hut, the Drooling Bastard program and more!

On this episode we share drinks and stories at The Hale Kahiki located in Echo Park, California. The Hale Kahiki is the home tiki bar space of Alan Smart and Michael Uhlenkott. If you're a fan of Spongebob Squarepants then you are a fan of Alan's work. He's the animation director for that show! And his partner Michael Uhlenkott is an artist and graphic designer who's work you've probably seen or purchased on sites such as Spoonflower. We're also joined by another "Michael" -- Michael Hanttula. He's the creator of the Tiki Bar Name Generator. A fun, slot-machine styled application that's strangely addictive. Google it and see for yourself!

I hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did bringing it to you. This podcast is a grass roots effort so I appreciate all the love and support you've given us recently. I can't thank you enough for that! With that said, sit back, relax and enjoy this recording with Alan, Michael and Michael direct to you from The Hale Kahiki.
